Own product v Affiliate programs

I know that everyone says that you need to develop your own products, rather than just being an affiliate, but if that's the case how come some big names like Phil Wiley (www.ozemedia.com) end up making it big online?
From what I understand he doesn't create much (any?) of his own stuff, but still makes a good return.
So I'm wondering whether to just join some of the better affiliate programs and spend my energy promoting these. For one thing I'd save the time involved in developing my own products and I could use this time market as an affiliate.
Can anyone provide me with their views on this?
