I think the reality is that there are a few people who are able to "make it big" as full time affiliates like Phil Wiley who you mentioned, but for most folk it's a question of building your own product if you want to earn a decent income.

My experience is that around 20% of my income will be from my affiliate programs, whilst 80% are from direct product sales - from info products that I have built myself.

I'd say develop your own products, but if you don't know how - get hold of one of the many how to create products type packages available from people like Yanik Silver or Michael Green himself.
