It's not a simply answer, but the best promotion comes in well placed and targeted ads, usually written in plain text.

So that means finding compatable websites to advertise on for example.

Also it is possible, though time consuming, to pick up plenty of free and traded links.

I recently watched this free Zeus promo via Michael, which was very impressive at http://www.howtocorp.com/zeuspromo

I've tried it out on my site and it IS driving traffic. But you've got to be prepared to put the elbow grease in there.
