Mel,
My advice would be to opt for an affiliate program which has the following criteria:
1. Ensure that the merchant actually has a range of products to sell - not just one or two.
2. Ensure that the merchant actually owns the product he is selling. In other words you are not joining a merchant or isn't the original owner of the product.
3. Ensure that when you send a visitor to one of the merchants products, you'll receive commission in the future no matter what else someone buys.
4. I don't personally worry very much about two-tier programs. Two tier means that you get paid a small amount (maybe 5%) when someone underneath you becomes an affiliate and then makes a sale. In my experience these programs do not make you rich.
