As a highly visible marketing and publicity author, I have been asked by both well-known and unknown authors and promoters alike to supply a blurb for a new information product. I can tell from the way many of these requests are worded and from the minimal or no samples provided to serve as the basis of the blurb, that many of the famous names who lend their names to these products have not thoroughly read them and in many cases have not even seen the product.
I always make clear in reply that the only way I will write a blurb is if I receive a copy of the complete product in its very-close-to-final version. Again, I can tell from the reaction of the person requesting that this is not the usual policy.
I also know from the times that I have found the product to be defective in some way and told the author why I could not write a blurb that no one else had done this, even when the product was quite bad. Two people even went so far as to go on and on about what a cruel, heartless and stupid person I was because I wouldn't give them a blurb like the others had done.
I'm not trying to set myself up as a saint here, only to give you all some background on what goes on behind the scenes. It's certainly easier to go ahead and praise a product you haven't seen or used and reap the affiliate commissions... until the rare instance where your greedy words blow up in your face.
