...you are comparing slightly different things. I signed up to be Stephan's affiliate (and have since dropped the links) because it wasn't a scheme as such. I've sold my own products and been an affiliate of other's products for a few years now, so this seemed like a nice addition to my other offerings.
If he took care of his CS problems and the other issues (including revamping the product), he would be able to offer affiliates a good opportunity to make money. It's a real product with a good affiliate commission, as opposed to some "opportunities" that border on illegal because you get paid for recruiting others into the business.
I have never participated in the other stuff you mentioned--like Cash Evolution--because it seemed like a scheme to me.
It's true--all the hype should have been a red flag, but much of it came from respected persons. If we always cringed when a product took off quickly, then words like "Beanie Babies" wouldn't even exist. :)
