Christopher,
At the risk of prolonging a thread that seems to have thrashed the dead horse from here to kingdom come, I am curious about a few things:
1. If you are so sure that you can't be taught anything relevant to your niche, why did you buy a book in the first place?
2. If you got no satisfaction from the reseller, why didn't you simply ask for your refund from Clickbank or PayPal. The former give 90 days unquestioned refunds and the latter 30 days. Unless the reseller had used another payment processor, in which case I'm sure they would have had similar safeguards in place.
3. Why has one bad experience left you so bitter? I buy many ebooks, and while I've never been refused a refund request, I do agree with you that not all ebooks are as good (for me) as advertised. But neither is a Big Mac, yet I still buy the odd burger.
Now let me address one misunderstanding that you seem to have.
The person you bought from was almost certainly a reprint rights owner, and NOT an affiliate. If it was an affiliate, the author would have been responsible, and I'm sure would have gladly refunded your 20 quid.
However, once reprint rights have been sold, the person who then sells to you is the defacto owner of the product. The original author is entirely removed from the deal and does not profit from the sale.
You have convinced yourself that ebooks are not for you. That is, in my opinion, a pity. Like you, I have a vast amount of real business experience - thirty years of it with the bluest of blue-chip companies here in the UK, and the last six as a self-employed marketing consultant. Yet I have rarely found an ebook that hasn't taught me something, or made me rethink something, or even made me see something familiar in a new way.
And if I find just ONE thing that does that in an ebook, I personally consider that the money is well spent. Of course, on the rare occasions that I don't, I ask for a refund. That you were not cheerfully and promptly refunded is inexcusable on the part of the reseller.
Content is always solid gold, but even if you read Jay Conrad Levinson or Dan Kennedy ('experts' whose credentials nobody would argue with) you'll find that you 'know' most of what they say. It is the way they put it together that has value and makes you create connections that you'd have otherwise missed.
So all I can add is please put aside your anger at one errant vendor. He is certainly NOT indicative of the entire market.
Most Internet marketers are very aware of how fragile their reputations can be, and are only too keen to do the right thing.
Martin.
