Hello Neil,
First, it's very kind of you (and Rebecca yesterday) to offer refunds to those who are dissatisfied. You'll keep your customers and affiliates much longer that way. Kudos.
Here's my take on this whole thing (for what it's worth . . .)
I purchased his book, printed and read it the very first day. I joined his affiliate program as well.
When I went back and re-read portions of his book it brought to mind a few observations and questions. First of all, I didn't really find anything "New" or mind-boggling. After all, it's basically about building your list and joint venture marketing. As commented by others, there are many ebooks already on this subject (I have a few myself).
Next, I am still trying to find the "Free" in all this. There's nothing free about it. The few resources he's mentioned have been around a while. Unless someone can point to something I've missed, calling himself the Free Ad Guru is a little over-hyped, don't you think? Effective ad copy is a good thing, but I feel like his bordered more on "mis-representation".
Next, not only did I have a hard time finding anything free, most of his links led you to some quite expensive (by my standards, anyway) software sites. Maybe it's good stuff, but again - I would suspect by his title that most people were looking for something - ANYthing - for free that hasn't already made the rounds.
And $34.95 per month to use his affiliate tools? Okay, maybe this is a good motivator for affiliates to actually get up and do some selling (I DO see the logic here), but the tools he supplies can be had all over the place for free/much cheaper.
His ad copy for the affiliates while not bad, left kind of a taste in my mouth. The letters you send to your list or other marketers has you saying how effective the program has been before you even start. One could argue - "Hey - you could always write your own copy!", but again, people who typically but into these programs have never written ad copy. I for one stink at it ;-)
And finally the customer service aspect. As someone who is in a customer service business off line, I can tell you that if I ignored my customers the way he does, I would have none. I simple auto response would go a long way. Also, If he really DID make a million, I would think he would hire a FEW people - not just one.
Overall, a few good tidbits of information, but certainly not worth the $97 (or $197 if you didn't get the popup).
Like I said, just my opinion.
Kind regards,
Mike
