Bill Hely does good posts always. And he know well this stuff.
I am sure, his book will be very useful for the people who just like you, Paul, tired by spammers and have had some difficulties to combat with them. But without knowledge of right ways to doing it you risk to be involved in this process for all time of your life.In addition, I want to tell you that well skilled spammer easily forges any kind of email headers and included IP addresses, except resolved by your ISP the last IP that your letter come from. If you see unreal fields of headers or IP-hoax you may send spam-abuse report for the last IP only (it is ISP as a rule). Most ISP have declared email address for spam-abuse reports. Remember, ISP will be able to investigate your report within time restricted by logs on their servers, so don't wait long to not be late. And never send your answer to the spammers or abuse-report somewhere else.
There are a lot of web sites where for free you can study good stuff about spam and whois-tools:
how to complain - (spam.abuse.net ; www.spamcop.net ; helpdesk of your ISP)
whois-tools - (openrbl.org ; www.geektools.com ; etc.)As to your question, I think, in counteraction to the disposable email address' Accounts new trick used by spammers currently consist in opening real email Accounts with the purpose of control and passage tracking of the letters through ISP filters and for exploring and harvesting email addresses of those ISP's members.
Spammers compose their email addresses which seems similar to the other members' addresses thereafter send to them messages by using "blind carbon copy" (via BCC-address field) to all of ISP's members who in their spammers-list. What occurs further you already know. So be cautious henceforth because in this case, I sure, you have had the contact with some spammer.
To your success,
Peter Shavelter Shavel
