What you said is very true, ie. whether have they read the stuff, and whether do they really mean what they said.

The key word in my statement above is "FEW" ... there're many famous gurus/marketers out there ... but only a few (perhaps a handful) that truly recommends something that they feel is worthwhile. These are the people I trust.
How to "find" these gurus then ? Easy ... just subscribe to their newsletter ... read them for a few months ... you can usually see a pattern ... if every newsletter is a recommendation of this product and that product ... then I would be a little wary.
Of course, there are other factors involved as well - ie. am I interested in the topic of the book being promoted ? Do I need it for my biz ? Will I have time to implement it ...
