Check out the various forums dealing specifically with hosting companies and ask for their advice. Eventually, when you find a few hosting companies that you like, send them an email asking for further info.

If they take too long (one company took 3 weeks before replying to one of my queries!) then give them the royal heave-ho. Imagine what being offline for days will do for your business if you can't reach your hosting company's support staff!

Don't be influenced by how good their website looks like. It is not a good indicator as to how reliable they are. It is possible that they have the money to employ a good web designer! Just contact them and see how long it takes to receive a reply.
