As has already been mentioned, B2 is the older version of Wordpress - you're always safer using the lastest version, as it can fix any security problems in earlier programs (an example is PHPBB, which was upgraded recently because of a huge security hole).
As for whether to use a seperate site or not for a blog, it depends on what you want to do. For insance, my site BigBizBlog.com is squarely about business and blogging - I refer to other products of mine in the articles, but generally keep them seperate.
On the other hand, I just did a blog for my father on airplanes (www.alliedplanes.com/blog). Because the blog is just one aspect of what he wants to do (sell designs, etc.), it's not the site's focus - the main page will expand as time goes on, and the blog is just a part of it.
But a blog is really good for people starting out and needing to be seen. I just created a new site (www.FreeWordZ.com), and listing it on my blog got it Google'd in under 48 hours. As well, BigBizBlog.com was in the search engines in a week, and my articles often get indexed within a day or two. You can't get that kind of speed with a regular site.
