When I am in a bookshop I can very simply look up the precise point that bothers me in the index, flip to those pages of the book, and flip through to find out the exact details of the exact part I am dubious about. If it does turn out to be simply a re-statement of something that I already know I can still judge the quality of the ewxposition to decide whether - even though I already know the material myself - the book might be better than others that I know of as far being of potential use to recommend to others. If it really is something that is new to me I might well buy the book right away.
That situation happens a lot in various areas I have some knowledge in. Quite often over the years I have happened across a book that really isn't saying much - if anything - that is new and yet nonetheless I buy several copies to give away to other people because I find that the way they put the information is better than various previous expositions I have seen of the same material.
But whether I find the mateiral to be completely new or merely a good exposition of something already known, I usually have at least a quick look at at least a few crucial spots within the book before I buy it and especially before choosing it as one to go out and buy copies of for a bunch of other people in the field whom I think also ought to read it.
It is simply normal when buying a book to be able to zero in on any page(s) of it that one might be dubious and check them out - to check whatever points one feels are crucial - before buying the book.
The fact that I cannot usually do that on the internet might explain why I still buy almost all my books from brick and mortar bookshops instead of via the internet.
