This is what I mean:
1. There are gobs of ways to make money without having to buy into a comp plan. There are free affiliate programs. There are reprint rights.
2. MLM companies usually either charge you just to participate or penalize you if you don't pay into the system. This is what I call "paying for the privilege to make money."
3. Let's take that Xango mentioned above. They pay 5% on the first level. That's 20 people paying $100 PV every month just to break even unless you get more people. That's a lot of people just to break even on your own purchases. That doesn't include promotional expenses, which obviously eat into your profits.
4. I'm not saying it can't work. I am saying it's people with huge lists like the two we are talking about here that are profiting.
5. Someone starting from scratch is starting in the hole. Why should you start in the hole? I know you aren't, but what about a newbie? It takes time to build a list of contacts.
Conclusion: If you are an established marketer, MLM may be a viable option. If you are a newbie, it isn't a good first step. If you are an established marketer, it still isn't a good option unless you feel good about deceiving newbies into thinking it's easy to make money in MLM.
