Kim, the absolute worst thing...

that most people do is to rely *solely* on an antivirus program and using it right "out of the box".
One of the main problems are that most of the default settings are set up for convenience and speed and not safety and security.
Most people also don't understand how these programs work and what they actually protect them from.
Hardly anything you buy or use today needs adjusting and tweaking and learning how to operate. Whether it's a VCR, a new car, or a barbecue grill people need to take the time to make it match their needs. Security software is no different.

PS One other point is that while most email viruses come through attachments you *can* get infected by simply reading an email.
