freeware and open source...

There are lots of reasons to put out good pieces of freeware
-- goodwill
-- brand it and have some viral marketing
-- use it as a trojan horse (in the Helen of Troy sense) to sneak spyware in
-- definitely to temp you to buy the more fully featured version.I was just thinking Adobe should give their software away--very limited versions--but you could SEE the other featurs. So, if you wanted to pay for that feature, you call up Adobe and get that feature activated. Then they'd know what people are really interested in. And some of us poor folk can have access to the parts of the program we want without having to pay for all those feaatures we don't care about.
As the previous poster said--yes, some is good and some is not too good. Some can be dangerous. I downloaded a copy of Ad-aware off of cnet and promptly got two java class byte exploit viruses.
But remember, too, there is a whole huge bunch of free code over at sourceforge.net--the home of far too many opensource projects to count. There you have the advantage of not only free code, but you have a good idea what state the project is in, because all the project documentation is (well, should be) there (and if it isn't, even that is telling...)
Good luck to you!
