Spiders and Engines...

Joe,
I have to make this quick as I'm leaving in a few moments to meet some friends.
First, think about how engines work...
They're driven by spiders. You have to get the spiders to your site. There are lots of ways to do this...
You can submit articles to the article repository sites (ezinearticles.com, goarticles.com, etc.). These articles will have a link to your site in its byline. The spiders crawl some of the important article repository sites often. They'll follow the links in your articles' bylines to your site(s).
You can post comments on high-profile blogs. Some blogs allow you to leave a link to your site that does not go through a redirect script. Post a comment to these blogs. Many of these blogs ping servers. Spiders crawl these servers. The spiders will find your site(s).
You can buy links. This could be a book in and of itself. Suffice to say, you can buy links. Spiders will follow those links to your site(s).
You can write press releases (or have the folks at prweb.com do it for you). The press release will have a link to your site. The press release will be distributed to lots of outlets. Spiders will crawl these outlets, find your press release and follow the links to your site(s).
There are TONS of ways to get the spiders to your site(s). But, the above should get you started.
Once the spiders come to your site, they'll gather some of your pages and take them back to the mothership (Google, Yahoo, etc.). They'll come back every so often if you give them a reason to (new pages, updated pages, etc.). When they come back, they'll gather more of your pages to take home to the mothership.
That is how you get indexed.
The days of getting indexed in 24 hours are long gone (unless you can get a link from cnn.com, apple.com, or some .edu or .gov sites).
Now, once your indexed, you'll need to turn your attention to getting ranked.
That is a whole 'nuther topic. LOL
Hope that helps. Feel free to sign up for my list (link below) as I'll be talking about some of this stuff in the future.
