Hi Steve,
Actually providing a free download area is straightforward and most people achieve it by running the user via an autoresponder like aweber.com
That way when the user gets to your page they simply enter their name and email address (for you to collect) and you then enter the location for a thank you page in your autoresponder from which you can provide the download.
Now, when it comes to selling that user something you need to get a little more sophisticated in order to ensure that they don't steal your purchase. There are various different solutions and one of the best (I would say this because it's mine) is Easy-Download Protector.
If you visit the http://www.Easy-Download.com website you can sign up for the free mini-course which is essentially a single PDF about protecting yourself from product. Incidentally, this will also show you how to go about providing a free download (as it's the process you'll follow to get the PDF itself).
To your online success!
