Hi Steve and Michael,
I have found that a download page should be used at all times, even when you are giving away free stuff. A download page has a magical power over the person that opens it.
If it appears on the download page the person wants it because they now feel that it is part of the download. there are several strategies that can be used on a download page to actually make more offers.
I believe that more offers = more sales, and no offers result in no sales.
A download page can also reduce support issues.
I wrote and ebook awhile back that is an exe style ebook that people with Windows XP has a hard time opening. I am not promoting this product right now until I have the time to recompile the ebook in a format that can be opened easily.
This product does come with a download page generator that can build a simple download page in about 2 minutes. To help Steve out here is my registration page that buyers are sent to after making a purchase so I can add them to a buyers list.

After you register you will be sent to a download page made by this generator where you can download the $34.97 product for free. I am giving this away free to the visitors of this forum.
Be sure to download the ebook fix tool on the download page if you are using Windows XP so you can open the ebook. You will have to play around with the tool but it will open the ebook eventually.
Steve I hope this helps.
Wishing you much online success,
