Well here's how I determine whether to delete a post, but just before I reveal that, I should mention that I rarely do delete posts in reality. I'm not into censoring spirited discussion, though I do have a preference for keeping it clean and don't like to see swearing on this board.

Before deleting people, I'll typically check whether they've posted before. Most spammers just come along, have never made a worthwhile contribution in the past, and make a damn stupid post. They stick out a mile and I'm nearly at the delete button from the subject heading and the unknown name of the person posting alone.

There are very many regulars on this board who I don't have any concerns over and I don't necessarily even read their posts. I just know that they'll be good.

This forum isn't administered by an automated system. It's me doing it as a real live human being, so there aren't rules that say that if you have more than one link in your post, then I'll delete it.

You might for example sign off like this:

Michael Green
Founder: http://www.howtocorp.com

... and still put something in the optional URL link at the foot of the page.

What really matters is that there is some value in your actual post. And that's really the main thing that I'm after. A good post always has some value to the person reading it. And posts stay live forever and this forum is being spidered by Google every day, so within 6 – 8 weeks your post will be publicly searchable from anywhere (all posts are searchable from within the forum all the time).

Incidentally, I never ban anyone from this forum. Instead I put them on ‘watch’. Being on ‘watch’ simply means that your message does not appear instantly, but instead has to be moderated by me.

NOTE: It is possible to get caught up in a range of 'watched' IP addresses and find that you're being moderated for approval for each message you post. This isn't necessarily because of something that you've previously posted, it could just be that a similar ‘watch’ pattern has been set up to your own IP address, for example - so don't get offended if you message doesn't instantly appear!

When someone posts spam, I usually delete their post and send them a personal email telling them to read http://www.howtocorp.com/forumprofits before they try to post again. I then set them to 'watch' status. They don't usually come back, though about 2 in 10 will buy the ebook and some have actually turned out to be excellent long-term contributors to the 'How To' forum, which is cool.

On occasion I don't delete a post, but instead go in and edit it to remove the offending part. I don't like very obvious ploys to build up an opt-in list for example. That’s a post that is completely banned on Blake’s forum, and although I don't go that far, I prefer not to see posts where the upshot is that the reader is being asked to do something other than post back to this forum. Otherwise it ceases to become a public discussion.

At this point, I should draw your attention to this note at the foot of the forum, in particular the bit which talks about editorial control, because I’m liable to take your posts and use them, especially in the TOP POSTS Thursday roundup:

NOTE: Posts Without Valid Email Addresses Will Be Deleted. The Moderator Reserves Right To Delete or Edit Any Message. Posts Containing Blatant Advertising Or Spam Will Be Immediately Removed!

I hope that the way I moderate allows people to contribute without anyone having to overly concern themselves about being deleted. I don't just delete a post because I disagree with it, or even because it contains criticism of me or anyone else. I am for allowing open discussion, within a ‘light-touch’ moderated environment.

I do always appreciate it when a 'How To' regular notices a spam post and simply posts a reply saying SPAM (the DNO appears automatically). That draws my attention to it and I can get it removed quicker.

As always I urge everyone to read one of these two excellent forum ebooks. Ones free, the other isn’t.

P.S. I should mention that every IP address is logged. I can see for example that every post you've ever made (Carl) comes from: xxxxxx.xxxxx.spokane1.wa.us.da.qwest.net (I've removed the first part intentionally here).

ntionally here).

How to avoid your posts getting deleted by me...
