I believe you are better going with option two. You mentioned that many of them were friends so you should approach them as friends. This means a short letter telling them briefly about your new book, why it is so exciting and how they can take advantage of it.

Yes, but remember, you are building for the long term. Treating your clients and friends with respect will do more to win business than any three page sales letter you could ever write.

Don't get me wrong, the sales letter is important. But you are really in need of relationships. Approach your sales as a relationship and you will have long term clients and friends.
