Apparently it is not safe to buy co-registration opt-in's any more, this just in from my US friend:-
"Well, the last two weeks have certainly been ... enlightening ... where internet marketing is concerned. So, lets start with the thing I'm getting the most questions about, the new anti-spam law that passed in california.
The short version is that you can NOT utilize purchased leads any more. For the moment, lets skip jurisdictional issues and go straight to the point.
Do you have the means or ability to fight the state of california in a court battle?
The answer is probably not. Therefore, if the state of california slaps you with a whopping $1,000 fine for every single email message you send to a resident of the state of california, will you be able to fight it?
The answer is probably not.
However, there is a bright light in this dark tunnel.
You see, the law does NOT stop email lists. It just stops you from utilizing purchased or rented lists, which, as you know, I am a BIG fan of for people just getting started on the internet. Buying leads is a very easy way to get your list going without you having to worry about things like advertising.
Unfortunately, if you live in the United States, only a fool is going to be purchasing leads any more. Those of you in other countries are PROBABLY safe ... but even then maybe not if you live in a US friendly country like the UK or something."
