Hi JL,
I've seen a lot of expert marketers give away a free report or 2 for 1 deal to their subscriber lists as a "thank you" during the holiday season. I have the feeling they do this for several reasons.
1) To really say thank you to their list for purchasing a product, staying with them, etc.
2) Since a lot of people are focused on spending their money on holiday items, sales of Internet marketing items tend to suffer, so offering something free positions the merchant to start the new year with bang. They gave away something free and starting in January start offering new products, new deals, etc. The free item is incentive to keep the merchant's name in front of the customer for purposes of selling something early in the new year.
3) Promotion, promotion, promotion. Even during holiday times, peak buying times, and slow times, you need to keep your product or name out there.
