the way that I look at pictures is: If they don't "speak" about the page content and your keywords then they are probably not needed.
I do not always follow that because I just love graphics. I do follow what William says and I use the proper tags and I use my keywords in my content.
Content is KING.
I use my most important keywords and phrases in my Titel tag and I keep the title between 60 and 90 characters.
I also use them in my Description tag and I keep the description with in 200 characters.
I stopped using tons of keywords per page and started to focus on only a few.
I also use my keywords in my Heading One tag.
Another thing that I have learned is that you should use your keywords as close to the start of a sentence, heading and paragraph as you can.
Like William said you should use the ALT tag on your graphics and be sure to use your keywords.
I would definitely steer away from hidden text. It could cause a death blow to your business.
I read that you should use 1-7% keyword density in your content.
Again, I love graphics and I personally try to justify to myself that they are needed, even though I know they are not. :)
