May I add a third approach?
You don't need to actually *make* your own products. And if you don't want to promote affiliate programs because - basically - you lose contact with the potential customers once you pass them to the affiliate program owner, resell rights might be the solution. You can buy resell rights from people who have gone through all of the creation phase and just reap the profits from their "hard work". Which, after all, doesn't even have to be *that* hard - you could compile a bunch of good articles together and voila, you have made a product!
The advantage of making your own from scratch is that it will be unique (if you choose wisely what to write about ;)
My personal recipe (which will be launched in January - so I can't tell you it's a successful one, *yet* :) is a mixture of products for which I bought resell rights, so I get to keep my customers emails and profit again from their *lifetime* value rather than selling them only once; to this I add a recurring "backend" by promoting affilate products that have a monthly billing (so, again, I get the most out of my promotional efforts, rather than just one sale), and - last but not least - I am making some products of my own to personalise any offer I make with unique products that are available *only* if you buy from me (a kind of very very mild unique selling proposition).
I decided to rely on more than one revenue stream for my success, rather than focusing all my energies on one aspect. The various streams might be smaller than a single focused one, but leave me more space to manouvre around and tweak things as I go :)
Cheers,
Saul
